Mechanical shock ranks highly among common causes of nonstructural failure for both electrical and mechanical systems. These are often experienced during routine shipping and handling, normal operation of aircraft and ground transportation, and accidental abuse, and can even occur in the face of more specific situations such as result from explosive warfare environments or other pyrotechnical displays.

Mechanical Shock testing is performed specifically to evaluate if products can withstand high G force and short duration impulse loads. Mechanical shock testing simulates the effects of a sudden acceleration pulse caused by impact, drops, or explosions. During testing, products are subjected to impact and to devices associated with product handling, shipping and transportation, gun firing, and more.

There are various types of shock tests—including half-sine, sawtooth, and trapezoidal pulses—that are associated with transportation-induced events (road bumps, potholes) and product handling events (drop impacts). Each of these unique tests offers manufacturers research data about how products will respond to real-life conditions during transport and handling. At the conclusion of the tests, a report is generated indicating the results and certifying third-party verification.

At Rocky Mountain Testing Solutions, we offer state-of-the art equipment to perform mechanical shock testing for commercial, aerospace, and military products. We perform such tests using our pneumatic shock table, drop tester, and electrodynamic vibration systems.

Pneumatic Drop Shock Table

Pneumatic shock testing is performed using compressed air and carefully profiled half-sine pulses. The compressed air forces a table into the impact surface, using the generated impulse force to impact the product being tested instead of relying on gravitational pull. This method makes high acceleration possible even within condensed vertical distances. Trapezoidal pulses can also be generated by incorporating the use of pneumatic cylinders. 

Electrodynamic Shaker

Our electrodynamic shaker utilizes electromagnetic force in a constant magnetic field to establish a vibration test system. This is amplified within the shaker, allowing the product being tested to be impacted by the specified vibration waveform.
