Thermal shock occurs when a temperature rise causes different parts of an object to expand by different amounts. This disparity of expansion can be understood in terms of stress and strain. At some point, this stress can exceed the strength of the material, causing a crack to form. If nothing stops this crack from expanding through the material, it will cause the object's structure to fail. Products, parts or packages that are being shipped from a warm environmental to a very cold location during transportation or loading should undergo thermal shock testing to replicate real-life circumstances. Thermal shock testing is designed for testing electrical, automotive, and military/aircraft parts and components. The thermal shock chambers in our laboratory are used for testing products and are specifically designed to thermally shock and stress a product as a result of rapid temperature changes with a temperature range -90.4°F to +392°F (-68°C to +200°C). The package or product undergoes a pre-determined number of cycles during which it is exposed to extremely high temperatures and then extremely low temperatures immediately afterwards before going back to ambient temperature. After the final thermal shock cycle has been performed, the package or product is inspected for damage, loss of reliability, and loss of performance.
